December 21 News and Notes

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Please click on this link to see a video that the kids wanted to share with you!

Jingle Bells

When we return to school on Thursday, January 3rd, we will be spending our day preparing for the Christmas Program that evening.  We have also moved our caroling trip to Luther Manor to Friday, January 4th, so we will busy with that project for Friday.  Please be sure your child goes over the program song and speaking part a time or two over the break.  Otherwise, there will be no additional Memory Work, Spelling, or Reading homework until the week of January 7th.

Please check with your child to see if they are in need of any school supplies to start the new year off right.  Remember, supplies that are clearly labeled with name or initials(even individual crayons and markers) are less likely to get "lost".

Look for new blog entries in 2013!  :  )

'Twas long time ago on a bed made of straw
That a baby was placed by a mother so mild.
Who knew in her heart that this baby now sleeping
That he was God's only child.

While shepherds were watching their sheep late at night.
They saw heaven break open with songs all around.
As thousands of angels sang glory to God
With a beautiful, heavenly sound.

Those shepherds ran down from their hillside in haste

Christmas Program Speaking Parts

As promised, here are the speaking parts.  A hard copy can be found in the Friday Communication folder.

November 30th News and Notes

To Look For In The Friday Folder ...
Three items of interest will be coming home in the Communication Folder on Friday:

*Book Order for December - Books make great Christmas gifts for young readers!  If you would like to order this month, please fill out the form and return with a check for payment made out to Scholastic Book Clubs by Wednesday, December 5th.  Two different flyers will be coming home along with a coupon that can be redeemed on this order only.  You can order off of each flyer but only need one check for payment.  We should have no problem getting the order back before we leave for Christmas Break.  If you would like your order to be a secret, please attach a note telling me so with the order, and I can get the books to you "incognito".

*Christmas Program Speaking Parts - These parts will be Memory Work for Friday, December 7th and periodically as we continue to prepare for our Christmas Program.  I will scan copies of these forms and have them available on the blog as well.

*Book It! Forms for the Month of December - If you wish to participate, please fill out and return to school by Friday, December 21st.  Please note that the pizza certificates expire after one month of issue date!  This is different from in the past.

YMCA Trip - Friday, December 7th
Grades 1-4 will be traveling to the Hannibal YMCA at noon on Friday to perform songs from our Christmas Program.  We will be taking the school vans.  If you would like to dress  your child in something festive for the season on that day, that would be great!

December Half Birthdays
Children who have birthdays in June will be eligible to celebrate their half birthday in the classroom sometime during the month of December.  In lieu of treats this year (due to allergies), we are requesting that students bring in a book to read (and a guest reader if available) to celebrate their day.  Students may also donate a book to our classroom library if desired.  If your child has a June birthday, please let me know what day in December would work best for your schedule.  Thanks!

Six Flags Read to Succeed Program

Hello everyone!  I hope you are having a fantastic holiday weekend!  Every now and then, something "gets lot" in my teacher bag, and this is something that I just "found" today.  I wanted to post this as soon as possible in case your child is interested in this reading incentive program.  I am not exactly sure of the due date, but would estimate it to be sometime during the last week of February.  I will send a regular copy in Monday's communication folder along with the correct due date.  Books read for Book It! (Pizza Hut) can also count toward the Six Flags goal.  This is not mandatory, but a fun way to help kids set a goal and read to earn something fun!  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

No School Next Week - Happy Thanksgiving!
Please note that the vocabulary words, spelling words, and memory work contained in this blog entry will be for the week of November 26th.  I hope everyone has a super break and a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Pizza Hut Book It! for November

First Grade Unit 2 Vocabulary Check
The vocabulary check that I did this week with first grade is coming home in the Friday Communication Folder.  Words that are highlighted in blue are those that need to be practiced the most.  Notice that I double-checked Unit 1 words on the back side.  Those are also highlighted in blue if in need of extra practice.

Look for the new Reading book to be coming home Tuesday evening, November 27th.  Before the main selection (the one listed on the homework half slip), there is a very short story that helps teach the vocabulary words for the upcoming main selection.  Also, vocabulary words are highlighted in yellow throughout the main selection.  Please check this out the next time the book comes home!  This is true for both the First Grade and Second Grade Reading books!

October 26th News and Notes

Wednesday is the last day of October!
October is coming to a close already!  If your student plans to participate in Book It! this month, please have completed forms sent to school by Wednesday, October 31st.  A form for November will come home in the Friday folder.

Scholastic Book Order for November
Also in the Friday folder, please look for a book order for the month of November.  If you would like to order, please return completed form along with a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs to school by Wednesday, October 31st.

Looking forward to our meeting next week!
Conference meeting days and times were sent home in the Wednesday night folder.  Please let me know if you did not receive it.  I'm looking forward to discussing your child's progress so far this year with you sometime next week!  Please remember also that there is NO SCHOOL FRIDAY due to Parent/Teacher Conferences.  Look for the Parent Questionnaire pictured below in the Friday folder.  Please consider filling this out and bringing it to our conference next week.  I find that it helps direct our conversation and allows us to remember topics that we wanted to talk about together!

Changes To Schedule Next Week
Due to no school on Friday, and trying to avoid homework on Halloween, weekly Reading assignments will come home on Monday and Tuesday evenings.  Memory will be said on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.  Our Spelling tests will be on Thursday, so please plan ahead so the bulk of the studying will not be on Halloween night!  Thanks!

Family Tree Extra Credit Opportunity

Here is a copy of the Family Tree worksheet that I sent home with the kids today.   I told them if they could fill it out and return it by Friday, they would receive something "extra".  This is not a required assignment, but something that the kids could learn about their family history from,  as we are in our "History" portion of our Social Studies curriculum right now.  If you would happen to have some pictures that could be scanned and sent along with the worksheet, that would be neat too.  Please do not send priceless, irreplaceable  originals!  :  )  Again, this is not a required assignment, but something that may allow the kids to dig further into the study of History.  Thanks!

October 19th News and Notes

Bibles For Second Graders Are Available From The Office
We have begun our "Bible Challenges" each week during Jesus Time, and I have noticed that several second graders still do not have a Bible.  These are available for purchase from the school office ($5 each) and can be used throughout your child's time here at St. John's. (Or if you would like to send a Bible from home, that would work too.)  The students enjoy these challenges and the experience of looking up verses in their Bibles.

Big Coat/Small Coat
Tis the time of year when the weather in the morning is often drastically different from the weather in the afternoons.  Please consider sending two coats with your child each day - a heavy one for the morning and a lighter option for the afternoon.  That way they can be comfortable for whatever the weather situation throughout the day.  Thanks!

Quincy Community Theatre Trip - Tuesday, October 23rd
We are SUPER excited about our trip to Quincy next Tuesday morning!  If you have a first grade student, please make arrangements to have a car seat available for the trip to Quincy.  These can be dropped off in our classroom when you come in on Tuesday.  Please remind all students of the importance of good behavior as we take St. John's out into the public and to a live theatre performance.  Thanks for your attention to these matters!

October 5th News and Notes

Please prepare for recess!
The weather people are saying that cooler weather is on the way!  Please remember to dress your child appropriately each day for outside recess.  We will be going outside on days that we can, and some of those may start getting a little chilly.

Memory Work Mix-Up
My apologies on the mix-up on Memory this past Thursday.  I practiced one verse with the kids at school, but then too late discovered that I had a different verse published on the blog.  So I allowed your student to say whichever verse they practiced, and gave them a plus (excellent), check (fine), or minus (needs work) grade in place of the usual number grade.  Sorry for the confusion!

Reading Homework/Unit Tests
Last week I forgot to mention that during our review (unit test) week in Reading, we will not have the regular Tuesday/Thursday night Reading homework.  Kids work hard on the unit tests all week during school time and we do not begin a new story on those weeks.  This will happen approximately once every six weeks.  Please look for the regular Tuesday/Thursday evening homework again this coming week.

Practice With Shoe Tying
I love that students are wearing shoes that they can run and play in easily for PE and recess.  Please make sure that your student is practicing or knows how to tie their own shoes.  It can get tough with 32 feet and one of me available to tie shoes.  Thanks for your help!

Library Is On Thursdays
Our library time is on Thursday mornings.  Please make sure that your student has returned his or her library books by Thursday morning so that they can renew or check out new books.

"You Can Be A Hero, Too!" Challenge
First and Second Grade issued a challenge to all of the classrooms in our school during the September 11th Chapel we presented on Wednesday.  Students who wish to participate can bring in one gently used clothing item (shirt, pants, shorts, skirt, shoes, etc) that does not fit them anymore.  These items will be donated to a local organization that distributes clothing to those who need it.  Students will place donated items in the grocery bag provided for their classroom.  Each class will then return the grocery bags to chapel next Wednesday, September 19th.   Just as there were many "everyday" heroes on September 11, 2001, we hope to be an everyday hero for someone in need in our community.

The materials list that was sent out during the summer and displayed at stores for our classroom mentioned bringing pencils but it left out the quantity.  Please make sure your child has at least 12 good pencils available to use at school.  Please ask your child to see if they have enough.  If they do not, please send more next week.  Extras can be stored in the materials shoeboxes at the back of the classroom.  Thanks!

Community News
As part of our social studies curriculum and your child's social studies participation score, we will be taking turns being the classroom's Community News reporter.  Each child will get the chance to bring home a Hannibal Courier Post newspaper, pick an article, and write a brief summary of it to share with our class.  Instructions can be found on the backside of the Community News Report Form.  We pick one student per week for this job.  Please be looking for your child's opportunity coming soon!

Blogging Full Speed Ahead!
Hello everyone!  I have heard from many of you regarding my blog invitation and it seems that it is working well so far!  Again, I thank you for taking the time to create your own gmail account in order to keep our blog more secure.   The kids have been talking about practicing their spelling words by using Spelling City and are really enjoying it!  This week, I will send one more printed copy of the blog home in the Friday Communication Folder.  Starting next week, please check the blog online on Fridays for the updated version.  Please let me know ASAP if you will need a printed copy.

Book Cover for "All God's People Sing"

I always forget to add this to the beginning of the year materials list!  Many second graders like to bring in a stretchy book cover for the "All God's People Sing" song book that they are allowed to take to chapel this year.  This is not a requirement, but if your student would like to bring one in, they are welcome to, and these are readily available at WalMart in the BTS section.  The book is approximately 6" by 9".

Welcome Letter

August 2012

Dear Parents and First and Second Graders:

Hello!  I would like to welcome my students back to school!

First – a little background :  Three years ago,  I returned to St. John’s as the first and second grade teacher.  I previously had taught second grade here for the 1998-1999 school year, and then first grade after that for three more years.  Previous to that, I taught for two years at Holy Rosary School in Monroe City at the first grade level.  And before all of that, I graduated from Culver-Stockton College in May 1996 with a degree in Elementary Education.

After taking some time out in the business world (working for Niemann Foods in Quincy as an Equipment Buyer), I decided that I was missing the imagination and creativity that teaching brought to my days. So I returned to the field of education.  I live with my husband, Doug, and six year old daughter, Maddie in Payson, Illinois.  Maddie is a first grader in our classroom this year!

I would like the parents to know that they are always welcome to visit our room.  If you have concerns, questions, etc…please don’t hesitate to call me at school (221-0215), on my cell
(217-430-9257), or e-mail me at kbradshaw@stjohnshannibal.org.  We are working as a team to help our kids get the best education possible!

A few things to keep in mind:

1.         Please check your child’s bookbag every evening for a School Note Folder.  This folder will be sent home every evening with important all-school notes and information that often needs to be signed and returned.  Also you will find information about your child’s daily behavior inside this folder.  From time to time, the folder may contain completed work, work to be singed and returned, or work that needs to be completed and returned to school on the following school day.    Please go through the completed papers with your child.  Help explain to them any mistakes that were made.  Be sure to praise them for their really good work!  Folders need to be returned to school on the following school day.

2.         NEW THIS SCHOOL YEAR!  The Weekly Friday Parent Letter may be viewed online in “blog” form at the following address  http://www.mrsbradshawsclassroomblog.blogspot.com/  .  Other forms of reference for our classroom (handwriting samples, Book It! Forms, etc…) may be found and printed from this blog.  Also there are links to fun websites such as Spelling City where students may practice their weekly spelling lists.  If you are unable to access the blog and would like to request a paper copy of the Friday Parent Letter, please let me know.

3.         DIFFERENT THIS SCHOOL YEAR!  Due to the increase of students with various food allergies, I have decided to eliminate edible birthday treats in our classroom.  In order to still allow children to celebrate their special day in class, I am encouraging the kids to donate one favorite book to the classroom library.  Kids can write their names and birthday on the inside cover so the book will always be a representation of that special day.  Students may also have a special person come in and read the book to the class (please make an appointment with me in advance!).

Kids with summer birthdays will have “half-birthdays” (exactly six months from their real birthday).  I will contact these kids about when their birthday can be celebrated.

3.         Students will have gym class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Please make sure that they are wearing comfortable clothing, and they must be wearing tennis shoes to participate.  Kids may bring a pair of tennis shoes to school to always have on hand for gym class.  Also, we will be having Art on Friday afternoons, so kids might want to come in clothes that are not their “Sunday Best” in case of an accident!

4.         Twice a week, first and second graders will be bringing home a Reading homework assignment in a Ziploc bag.  Also included will be a note to sign and return indicating what the student is to read.  Please check your child’s bookbag  on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for this assignment.  Other regular homework in first and second grade will be Memory Work, Spelling Words (Friday tests), and Reading Sight Words which can all be found on the Friday Parent Letters.  Both first and second graders may have additional homework depending on what is not completed at school.

5.         Much of elementary school in general involves the learning of important social skills such as good classroom behavior and getting along with others.  Our classroom uses several management plans to accomplish this goal:

            1.  The Card System – Each child has a pocket of colored index cards at the back of the classroom.  Each day every student starts with a GREEN card.  When a student needs to be reminded of their behavior he or she then turns their card to WHITE.  When a student needs to be reminded again, he or she must turn their card to YELLOW and they will sit for five minutes of their recess time.  If the student needs to be  reminded a fourth time, he or she turns their card to ORANGE and they will sit the entire recess time.  A fifth turn will result in a HOT PINK card which brings a silent lunch, loss of entire recess, and a possible visit to the principal and/or a call to parents.

            2.  Row Prize – This is another whole class plan.  Each row in the classroom has the opportunity to earn points with good behavior throughout the school week (such as quietness, being ready first to start with the next activity, etc).  On Friday afternoon, the row with the most points gets a small prize.

I’m sure I’m forgetting something!  Please let me know if you have any questions.  I look forward to working with you this year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Bradshaw
