Upcoming Events Next Week:
Wednesday, May 20th - Field Day
Please send your child to school with their yellow St. John's eagle t-shirt, or another St. John's shirt, comfortable pants or shorts, and tennis shoes. Students may bring a water bottle marked clearly with their name. I have sunscreen for them, but a hat might be helpful to shield from the sun.
Thursday, May 21st - Packing Up Supplies
Please send your child with their bookbag and a couple of extra grocery bags in case their supplies fill up their bookbag!
Friday, May 22nd - Last Day of School/ Dismissal at 11:00
Kids will not need their bookbags. They will be bringing home their pizza box. Please note the change in dismissal time - we will not be serving lunch.
Field Day - Wednesday, May 20th
We are searching for some parents that might be able to help out with all or part of Field Day this year. Teachers will be running games and we are needing parents who can take groups of students from game to game. Please let me know on Monday if you can help us!
Library Books
All library books must be returned to school before your student can receive their report card. Please check with your child to be sure that this has been taken care of. Thanks!
Religion
There will be no memory work assignments for next week.
Reading/Spelling
There will not be a formal reading story or spelling test next week. We will try to have a Spelling Bee for each grade consisting of all spelling words from the year on Thursday morning. You can help your child prepare by studying spelling words from all blog posts this year. Spelling City would be a great resource as well!
Next Week's Book Nook Topic:
Magic Tree House, continued...
Thanks for all that you do! Have a nice weekend and week ahead!

First Grade Items Needed
For upcoming Math lessons, we will be building a classroom "grocery store". I would like to have each first grader bring in one empty food box or container that we can use for this project. Please have these items at school by Wednesday of this week.
Second Grade Item Needed
Since second graders are working out of two classrooms, we are having some issues with school supplies. It would be helpful if each second grader could bring one new eight count box of crayons. They can keep this box downstairs, and also have crayons upstairs in their pencil boxes. Please send this new box to school by Friday of this week.
Thanks in advance for your help on these projects!

Six Flags Read to Succeed Challenge!
Two weeks left... forms due back to school on February 13th!
Save The Date!
Our big year-end field trip for the first and second grade will take place on Thursday, May 7th. We will be touring the Fox Theatre and The Butterfly House in St. Louis. We will need lots of parent chaperones for this event. Please let me know if you might be able to join us! More details to follow as we get closer...
Snow Days and the Blog
If we should happen to have a snow day within the next few months, please be sure to check this blog for updates on what might be due the day we come back, etc. Unless the power is out, I should be able to update you via this blog from my home way over in Illinois!
Valentines Day
Valentines Day will be celebrated in our classroom on Friday, February 13th. Below is a list of children in our classroom. This list will be helpful as children are working on their valentine cards. Please make sure that each child brings a card for every member of the class. Please let the kids fill out their own valentines, as this provides a good chance for handwriting and spelling practice! We will begin our Valentine's Party at 1:00 on that Friday afternoon. THIS DAY WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED AS AN EARLY OUT, BUT WE WILL BE ATTENDING SCHOOL FOR THE FULL DAY. If kids would wish to bring their cards early, I can store them until the day of the party. Thanks!

January 9th News and Notes
Big Changes in First and Second Grade!
On Monday of this week, we welcomed our 20th classmate, and 10th second grader to our school. Welcome to Riah Wigfall! Since our class has now grown to such a large size, the School Board made the decision to hire Mrs. Brooke Gheens to help out with the second grade in the mornings each day. The library has been moved, and that room is now set up as a classroom for the second grade, who will participate in Daily 5 activities and Math with Mrs. Gheens. First grade will be working upstairs in our original classroom with me each morning. Welcome Mrs. Gheens!
This is very exciting since it will allow a teacher to meet with each Reading group every day. Also, it will allow each class to have a Math lesson everyday. As a result, you can now expect to see Math homework in the folder almost every evening. Homework will not be given during lessons ending in 0 or 5, since those are assessment lessons that are done at school. Thanks in advance to your attention to these schedule changes! Let me know if you have any questions regarding these changes.
