December 5th News and Notes

Six Flags Read To Succeed
In the Friday folder, please look for the form for the Six Flags Read To Succeed program.  Students completing 360 minutes of recreational reading between now and February 13th will receive a free ticket to Six Flags.  Books read for the Book It! program can also count for this, but Reading homework assignments cannot.  (BOOK IT FORMS FOR DECEMBER CAME HOME IN FOLDERS EARLIER THIS WEEK!)  Please read the information on the form for further details.  This is not required, but what a fun way to start the new year by making a goal to read more often!

Snow Days and the BlogI
If we should happen to have a snow day within the next few months, please be sure to check this blog for updates on what might be due the day we come back, etc.  Unless the power is out, I should be able to update you via this blog from my home way over in Illinois!  Please let the office know if you did not receive a mass information test call this past week.  This was a test to make sure that all phone numbers can be reached in case of a special announcement or snow day cancellation.

Christmas Time, Christmas Talent!
When:  Thursday, December 18th, 7:00 p.m.
Where:  St. John's Lutheran School Gym

Drivers Needed
We will be presenting some of the talent from the Christmas Time, Christmas Talent! program to the residents of Luther Manor on Friday morning, December 19th.  Please let me know if you might be able to help transport students to that event.

Toys for Tots in Lieu of Classroom Exchange
Instead of an exchange of gifts between students, we are encouraging the kids to continue to consider giving to those in need by bringing a new or gently used toy to be presented to the Toys for Tots Program.  The kids may bring in an unwrapped gift anytime next week.  Gifts will be picked up on Friday afternoon, December 12th.  Thank you for considering this donation!

We are SUPER excited about our trip to Quincy next Wednesday morning!  If you have a first grade student, please make arrangements to have a car seat available for the trip to Quincy.  (We will be taking the two school vans and a few parents will also be driving).  Car seats can be dropped off in the gym when you come in on Wednesday.  Please remind all students of the importance of good behavior as we take St. John's out into the public and to a live theatre performance - Tales of A Fourth Grade Nothing.  Also, kids may want to consider wearing nicer clothes than those for an average school day.  Thanks for your attention to these matters!

Please prepare for recess!
The weather people are saying that cooler weather is on the way!  And often this time of year, temperatures can fluctuate up and down!  Please remember to dress your child appropriately each day for outside recess.  We will be going outside on days that we can, and some of those may start getting a little chilly.

September 19th News and Notes

New This School Year
Kindergarten, First, and Second grades are now reporting student progress by using an ungraded report card system.  In the past, first and second graders were utilizing letter grades to show progress, but now it will be more of a checklist of skills needed.  Therefore, we will NOT be using the Thinkwave online grading program for displaying grades this year.  Grades 3-8 will continue to use Thinkwave.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Spelling City!
A fantastic way to study spelling words is by using the link above for a website called Spelling City.  NEW THIS SCHOOL YEAR:  St. John's has purchased the premium edition of Spelling City, which will add more games and activities than were available last year!  The catch:  you will need to have your student login each time when starting up the website with their own username and password in order to access the premium activities.  Usernames and passwords can be found on a notecard coming home in the Friday Communication Folder.  Please look for this notecard, and login Spelling City to play!  Look for the lists under the group name "First and Second Grade 2014".

School Pictures!
School pictures will be taken on Wednesday, September 24th.  The fall picture is the one from the waist up.  Please send your child to school prepared for pictures on Wednesday!

Our Helper On Tuesdays
We welcome Megan Moreland to our classroom as an extra pair of hands on Tuesday mornings!  Miss Megan is a freshman at HLG, majoring in Elementary Education.  We are glad to have her join us!

Saxon Math Homework
As we continue to work to solidify our classroom schedule, it is looking like you can expect to see Saxon Math homework to be coming home in the Communication Folder on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings.  This was different this week, as we were testing (Lesson 10), but please look for it on those evenings as we continue on with Lesson 11 on Friday...

Religion
Memory Work for the Week of September 22nd:

Tuesday (First and Second)
We know that for those who love God all things work together for good.  Romans 8:28

Thursday (First and Second)
You did not choose Me, but I chose you.  John 15:16

Friday (Second)
The Fourth Commandment:  Honor your father and your mother.

September 5th News and Notes

Thursday, September 11th = PATRIOT DAY!
On September 11th, we remember the heroes from 2001.  Please have your child wear red, white, or blue on Thursday to help recognize this important day in our history!

Religion

There will be a normal schedule for Memory Work next week.  Memory Work consists of lyrics to the song that grades Kindergarten through Fourth will be singing at the September 14th 10:00 St. John's Church worship service!

Tuesday (First and Second)
Teach me Lord to wait.
Down on my knees
Till in Your own good time
You'll answer my plea.

Thursday (First and Second)
Help me not to rely on what others do.
But to wait in prayer for an answer from You.

Friday (Second)
The Second Commandment:  You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

Reading/Spelling
This week, we continued to practice being independent readers and writers using "The Daily Five" method.  While students built stamina while "Reading to Ourselves" and "Writing On Our Own",  I was able to do some diagnostic testing on each student's reading abilities.  We will conclude our introduction of The Daily Five next week, and plan to begin our Reading and Spelling studies starting the week of September 15th!  In the Friday Communication Folder, please look for a handout which will be helpful when we start digging into these subjects.  One side features a Guided Reading Star which your student is using to help coach other students on difficult words while "Reading with Someone".  Please use this tool at home while reading with your child, and ask them about "coaching" or "time".  The flipside demonstrates the American Sign Language alphabet, which can be a fun way to practice those Spelling words!

September Book Order
A book order form can be found in your child's Friday Communication Folder.  If you would like to order this month, please send order and payment back to school by Wednesday, September 10th.  Please make checks payable to the company from which we are ordering and return in an envelope marked with your child's name.  Please consider giving online ordering a try!  Please use class code   GQYQQ   and click the link above for Scholastic Reading Club.

Next Week's Book Nook Author:

August 29th News and Notes

Blogging Full Speed Ahead!
Hello everyone!  This week, I will send one more printed copy of the blog home in the Friday Communication Folder.  Starting next week, please check the blog online on Fridays for the updated version.  Please let me know ASAP if you will need a printed copy.

Sleep and Breakfast Are Important
We are still adjusting to being back in school again, and many of the kids are used to getting up late, eating a late breakfast, then having a normal lunch time.  Now that breakfast is happening early, they are "STARVING" by the time lunch finally rolls around at 12:00!  Please encourage your student to go to bed at a reasonable time, and to eat a good breakfast before coming to school each morning.  Unfortunately, there are no snacks (or naps!) in first and second grade!  Thanks!

Saxon Math Homework
Thank you to everyone for your attention regarding the math homework!  This is a very important part of the Math program and will help them practice the skills they will need to move forward.  I am still working to establish our weekly schedule, so Math homework is not quite as frequent as I had anticipated.  Please continue to look for the homework in the folder each evening, just in case.  It works best when you give your student a few minutes to complete the work on their own, then sit down with them and look over their paper (both sides) to make sure that they understand and have the correct answers.  This homework is not an attempt to "trick" your child at all.  If they miss something, please  do fix it with them and talk about the answer so that the next time they encounter it on their own - on a test for example - they may be more successful.  Please have them use pencil and crayon only (no markers or pens) to complete their work.  If you have any questions on how to manage the math homework with your child, please let me know.

Parent Questionnaires and Handbook Sign-Off Sheets
If you have not yet returned these items to school, please do so on Tuesday morning. Thanks!

Morning Routine
Please continue to support and encourage your child to check in and follow our new morning routine.  Kids can come into the gym and say their Memory Work to me right away on Memory days!

Handwriting Practice Sheets
In the Friday Communication Folder, please look for a handwriting practice sheet that your child can keep at home and refer to when practicing their handwriting.  We use the D'Nealian style of handwriting at St. John's, and yes...we do still teach cursive!  This will begin toward the end of second grade!

Religion
Memory Work for the Week of September 1st  ... please note the change in due dates for next week  due to NO SCHOOL MONDAY FOR LABOR DAY:

Wednesday (First and Second)
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Psalm 46:1

Friday (First and Second)
I trust in You, O Lord; I say, "You are my God."  Psalm 31:14

No additional Memory Work for Second Grade on Friday this week!

Reading/Spelling
We have been working on ways for students to become more independent learners this week. We have been practicing techniques from The Daily Five - including "Reading to Ourselves", "Reading with Someone", and "Writing On Our Own".  This week, we added "Word Work" and "Listening to Reading".  We will continue to work on this next week. Please look for the first Spelling Test and Reading Sight and Vocabulary Words to appear further into September.

McDonald's Superstars of the Week:
First Grade:  Issac Chen
Second Grade:  Eric Forney

Next Week's Book Nook Topic:
Alphabet Books

Thanks for all that you do for your student!  Have a nice weekend and week ahead!

August 22nd News and Notes

Blog Invitations
I am including a printed copy of this week's blog in the Friday Communication Folder. Please let me know if you have any problems accessing the blog using the address on the pamphlet that I gave out on Orientation Night. (Also, let me know if you have not received (or need more copies of) this pamphlet.)  Thank you for helping St. John's save on paper and printing costs again this school year! Please be sure to check the blog every Friday for a new parent letter.

New Morning Routine
The new routine of meeting in the gym in the mornings is going great!  We are discussing ways to speed up the sign-in process (and as people get used to it, that should help as well).  Please remember to tell your child to sign in and declare their lunch and extended care choices.  Also, please remind them to set their lunch boxes and bookbags down by the piano (our class only), and to have a seat by the 1st and 2nd grade sign.

Religion
As part of our first and second grade Religion curriculum, I will be assigning Bible verses for the children to memorize and repeat back to me. Verses will be said twice a week for first graders (Tuesday and Thursday) and three times per week for second graders (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) unless otherwise notified. We will be practicing them during class time, but some additional help from home would be appreciated. Look for the Memory Verses on the Friday parent letters.

Tuesday (First and Second)
I praise You, for I am...wonderfully made.  Wonderful are Your works.  Psalm 139:14

Thursday (First and Second)
The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.  1 John 4:4

Friday (Second)
The first commandment: You shall have no other Gods.

Reading/Spelling
We have been working on ways for students to become more independent learners this week. We have been practicing techniques from The Daily Five - including "Reading to Ourselves", "Reading with Someone", and "Writing On Our Own".  We will continue to work on this next week. Please look for the first Spelling Test and Reading Sight and Vocabulary Words to appear in September.

Saxon Math Homework
Please look for the first math homework sheet in Friday's communication folder along with a parent letter which briefly describes the program. Help your child complete the homework, and return in the communication folder on Monday morning. Thanks in advance for your attention to this important subject!

Parent Questionnaire
Also in the communication folder, please look for a brief questionnaire that I hope you will fill out and return so that I can learn a little more about your child.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Handbook Sign Off Sheets
Please remember to read our new 2014/2015 St. John's School Handbook, sign the back page, and return that page in your student's communication folder.  Thanks!

May 23rd News and Notes

Field Trip Wrap-Up
We had a great time in Springfield on Tuesday!  A big thanks to the parents that were able to go along and chaperone, and to all parents for getting the kids to school on time to leave at 7:30 and for making sure they had their lunches and spending money!  We had beautiful weather and safe travels, and the kids enjoyed themselves, which was the whole purpose!  After totaling up all expenses, I do see that I had my chaperones overpay for the trip by about 66 cents.  If you would like your change, please see Mrs. Kendall in the office and she will take care of that for you...

Activities For Next Week

There are several special activities going on next week for the last week of school!

Goodbye  and God's Blessings to Mrs. Winters!
We are sad to say good-bye to our classroom aide, Mrs. Winters.  She and her family will be moving to St. Peters this summer.  She has done so much to help us this school year!  We will miss her greatly!

Thanks for all that you do for your child and their education!  Have a nice, long weekend and week ahead!
